As you age, your skin loses some of its natural elasticity. This can result in things like wrinkles and fine lines, sagging skin under your chin and jaw, and lines around your neck. Together, these common age markers can cause you to look older than you feel. One solution is the facelift, a surgical procedure that can pull the skin tighter, rejuvenating the appearance of the face and neck. Dr. Brad Gandolfi, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, performs facelift procedures for patients in New York City.

The Benefits of a Facelift

There are a number of benefits you can expect from your facelift procedure:

  • Improvement in sagging skin around the midface, jawline, or neck
  • Softening creases and wrinkles, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Reducing the appearance of jowling or a double chin
  • Eliminating lines and excess skin from the neck
  • An overall rejuvenated and natural look

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

It is Generally Ideal For:

  • Patients with loose, sagging skin who wish to rejuvenate their appearance
  • Healthy people without medical conditions that could impede healing
  • Patients with good skin complexion that is healthy and clear
  • Those who have realistic expectations about what a facelift can achieve

It is Not So Great For:

  • Patients who are very young or who have faces that have not fully matured
  • Those who have a history of wound healing problems or severely sun-damaged skin
  • Patients who have unfair expectations about their facelift results

The Facelift Procedure Process Explained

What can you expect from your facelift? While the specifics may vary according to your needs and expectations, here is a broad overview of what you can anticipate.

You will begin your journey by having a phone call with a member of our team, discussing your medical history and aesthetic goals, then scheduling your consultation with Dr. Gandolfi.

During this appointment, Dr. Gandolfi will perform a physical examination, review images, and ask some additional questions about your cosmetic goals. You will also have a chance to ask your questions and learn more about the anesthesia options offered. The average length of a consultation is around 30 minutes.

Dr. Gandolfi and his team will provide you with guidelines to help you prepare for your facelift. This will mean abstaining from smoking, pausing certain medications and supplements, and ensuring that you fast for a few hours before the procedure. You can always contact our office with any specific questions about surgical preparation.

Upon your arrival at our surgery center, you can expect a warm welcome from our surgical team. They will walk you to your operating suite and administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable.

For your facelift, Dr. Gandolfi will need to make incisions either behind the ears or behind the hairline, minimizing any visible scarring. Through these incision sites, he will carefully sculpt, remove, or reposition fat tissue. Once your face has been recontoured, he will pull the skin tissue tight over it and remove any excess skin.

Before you are discharged, you will receive all the guidelines you need concerning diet, skincare, and cleaning your incision sites. By adhering to these guidelines, you can minimize the visibility of your scarring and promote optimal results.

You should plan to take at least a week to rest and recover at home, using medications to manage discomfort as needed and applying icepacks to control swelling. Swelling and bruising may last for a few weeks making the results of your facelift not immediately evident.

Your facelift results can last a very long time! To extend your results as long as possible, be sure that you adhere to aftercare guidelines carefully, and maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. You may also benefit from future treatments such as BOTOX®, fillers, and medical grade skincare to enhance and extend your plastic surgery results.
